JOV’ARTE Bienal Jovem 2023 - Loures, Portugal

On the 20th of June 2023, the jury of JOV’ARTE Bienal Jovem Loures made their pre-selection nominations of works for the  2023 competition. Luso-Brazilian Gothic by Brazilian visual artist Pedro Hugo Vilanova, which had already played a key part of his first solo show Outsider at  Galeria Prof. António Lopes in Covilhã, was selected for the second phase of the competition.

In the quiet moment that comes after a deep conversation, the scene appeared as if it were obvious. The broth of references in the unconscious sometimes throws a ready-made idea to the surface. A couple of friends inspired a rereading of Grant Wood's painting in an immigration context, the version emerged as if it were always there waiting for the trigger. The trigger was a story of change, changes always lead to a state of contemplation, the inertia of emotion and expectation of the original frame combines with the inertia and silent expectation of the slow process of reception in the so-called "outside". Is being here better than being there? Of course! Just behave and look to the future.
